The top 8 ways to celebrate Lunar New Year in Sydney

The city of Sydney truly comes alive for the Lunar New Year period, and the Year of the Horse is no different.

Here are our top eight ideas for attractions, activities and events that will make this Lunar New Year the most unforgettable yet.

1. Strike a pose with the giant Golden Horse

When: Now until February 28

It’s the Year of the Horse and to celebrate, we’ve added three larger than life installations to our centre.

In Centre Court on Level 1, a majestic Golden Horse towers over five metres tall. It’s perfect for a Lunar New Year selfie.

Upstairs at the 1909 Dining Precinct, discover two playful three-metre-tall horse installations adding festive charm to your dining experience.

Make sure you grab a photo before these marvels trot away on February 28.

2. See three breathtaking high poles shows

When: 14 February, 2pm & 6pm | 15 February, 2pm

One of the biggest highlights of the festival, the Jin Wu Koon dance troupe returns with three FREE high pole shows this Lunar New Year. Famous for their gravity-defying acrobatics, these performances blend art, culture and athleticism in a truly unforgettable way.

This is the most popular event of the program — arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure a great viewing spot.

3. Visit Sydney Lunar Streets – the Haymarket street party

When: 14 February, 5 – 10pm

Chinatowns around the world come alive during Lunar New Year — and Haymarket is no exception.

On the evening of Friday the 14th February, the streets and laneways of Chinatown and Thaitown will burst into colour, music and celebration as Sydney Lunar Streets lights up the precinct for one unforgettable night.

If you’re visiting Market City earlier in the day, catch the High Poles Lion Dance shows at 2pm or 6pm, then head straight out to continue the celebrations across Haymarket.

You can expect lion dances, DJs, street food, bustling markets and dazzling displays as the Year of the Horse is celebrated across the neighbourhood.
