Experience the Lunar New Year festivities at Market City with free larger-than-life installations that bring good fortune and joy to all! Snap a selfie with the giant snakes in the Centre Court for luck and prosperity in the year ahead.  

This installation is open every day. Share your photos by tagging Market City on Facebook and Instagram!  

Plus enjoy traditional events — including three spectacular high pole shows, roaming lion dances and store blessings, six lion dance workshops for kids and 5,000 lucky red envelope giveaways — all for free! 

With so much happening throughout January and February, a visit to Market City is an experience you won’t want to miss!

The iconic Jin Wu Koon troupes return to Market City for the Year of the Snake, bringing breathtaking high pole and dragon dance performances that will leave you mesmerised! Towering above the crowd on three-metre high poles, this traditional artform is an awe-inspiring way to welcome the Lunar New Year.  

We’re also giving away adorable plush snake toys during the shows, perfect for our young fans in the audience!  

This is one of our most spectacular Lunar New Year events in Sydney. You won’t want to miss it!  

Arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime to secure your spot. This event is always a crowd favourite and fills up fast. All shows are expected to be lively and bustling, so consider getting public transport.  

Massive lucky red envelope giveaways

We’re spreading good fortune this Lunar New Year, with over 5,000 lucky red envelopes — also known as hóngbāo or lai see — to give away! Each envelope includes a dining or shopping voucher, chocolate coin and four unique Year of the Snake tattoos.

Don’t miss out! Lucky red envelopes will be distributed inside Market City and just outside the front entrance. See dates and times to grab yours!

Kids’ lion dance workshops

Enjoy a fun, meaningful activity to engage the family in the Lunar New Year with free traditional lion dance workshops. This dynamic form of movement and storytelling is a great way to educate children on Lunar New Year traditions and share in the festivities with others. 

Traditional calligraphy with Madam Tot

Learn the beauty of Chinese calligraphy at our interactive station hosted by Madam Tot. These art workshops provide a hands-on opportunity to explore traditional artistic techniques, with a perfect blend of culture and creativity for all ages! Fees apply.

Sydney Lunar Streets

1 February, 5pm — 10pm
Haymarket

Join the community for an unforgettable street party to launch the Sydney Lunar Festival and welcome the Year of the Snake. Wander through Haymarket and explore market stalls featuring food, gifts and more, be captivated by a mix of traditional and contemporary performances across three sites and dance the night away as the resident DJ sets the vibe with infectious beats.
