Lunar New Year Activities

Chinese Calligraphy

When & Where: Friday 18 Jan – Monday 4 Feb 10am to 6.30pm, Level 1

We welcome the return of Chinese Calligraphy to Market City! It’s time to remove last year’s Lunar message and pick up your new messages to inspire and guide you into the new year. Spend $20 or more at at Market City store and receive a FREE calligraphy piece from our resident calligraphy artist. Simply show your receipt within the applicable dates and receive your personalised Lunar New Year message to decorate your home. Additional calligraphy pieces can be purchased from $5 each.

Year of the Pig Wall Mural

When & Where: From Friday 1 Feb, everyday, Level 3

It is the Year of the Pig, and to celebrate, we will be creating a mural that will be over 18 metres long! Market City invites the community to visit the mural and take selfies as we celebrate this year’s zodiac. There will be a 3 metre tall peach tree which is often known as the fruit of the gods representing longevity, health and good fortune.

Year of the Pig Mural Workshop

When & Where: Weekend Activity 2-3 Feb, 9-10 Feb, 16-17 Feb, 12pm-4pm, Level 3

Come and help us decorate the peach tree during the weekends over our Lunar New Year celebrations. You can write your own message or simply just colour in the peaches or flowers. Children, mums, dads and friends are invited during the festival weekends to add decorative elements to the mural to welcome the new year.

1909 Dining Precinct Chef Event with Adam Liaw

When & Where: Sun 3 Feb From 12pm, Level 1 Centre Court

Eating symbolistic food is part of the Lunar New Year celebration tradition. The talented Adam Liaw will host a chefs event at Market City where participating restaurants from our 1909 Dining Precinct will showcase their Lunar New Year celebratory dishes and demonstrate how to make their chosen dish. Learn recipes from The Dolar Shop, Kogi, Beijing Impression, and Yayoi.

At the Chefs event, there will also be opportunities for customers to take home an autograph from Adam Liaw. Plus, we will be giving away vouchers to dine at our 1909 Dining Precinct restaurants as well as Adam’s latest cook books.

Roaming Lion Performance

When & Where: Tues 5 Feb 2019, 6pm, throughout the centre

Yau Kung Mun Team will perform their traditional roaming Lion dance throughout the centre on Lunar New Year’s Day, Tuesday 5 February. This ritual will involve a blessing of stores, whereby the lion plucks a lettuce leaf containing a red-packet hung above the new retailer. The red packet contains money, which is a token of appreciation for the lion performers.

JIN WU KOON Lion High Poles Performance

When & Where: Sat 9 & Sun 10 Feb 2019, 3pm, Level 1 Centre Court

The talented acrobats from Jin Wu Koon will also be entertaining us with their High Poles Performances. See their jaw-dropping skills as they perform their amazing high poles freestyle lion dance. This astonishing performance showcases awesome stunts with pole jumps up to 3 meters high and over distances up to 2 metres. A truly memorable and unique experience, it continues to be a crowd favourite at Market City year on year. Jin Wu Koon have represented Australia in numerous international competitions in countries including China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
